Kathmandu, June 20 (RSS): Authorities concerned have stressed the need for making laws that would help make journalism more dignified.
They made this statement at an interaction on draft Press Council Act and Law related to rights of privacy and journalists’ code of conduct’ organised today here by the Press Council Nepal.
Speaking on the occasion, district judge Ramesh Pokharel stressed against laws that suppress the rights of journalists.
Acting Chairperson of the Council Kishor Shrestha spoke against violation of journalists’ code of conduct in the name of press freedom.
Saying Council Act has been sent to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Federal Affairs for the suggestion, Acting Chairperson Shrestha said that a new provision is going to be introduced where one can adopt journalism profession only after taking a week-long training regarding Journalists’ Code of Conduct.
Similarly, Executive Chairperson of the Nepal Television and former President of Federation of Nepali Journalists, Dr Mahendra Bista, said that laws, curbing the press freedom of media houses, should be amended.
He said that Press Council should be taken to all provinces, saying appointment of Chairperson of Press Council would be done away from political appointment.
Former President of Press Council, Borna Bahadur Karki, stressed the need of reforming the existing Council Act.
He further said that the Council Act should incorporate the issue of making media houses more responsible and disciplined.
Likewise, President of FNJ, Govinda Acharya said that the Council Act should have the provision of monitoring all media houses.
Deputy General Manager of Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) Surendra Nepali said that the Council Act has to incorporate the matter of copy right.
Saying they have been sending the cases related to journalism at the Council, Superintendent of Police, Ramdutta Joshi, said that they have been collaborating with Press Council since earlier.
