Kathmandu, June 28 (RSS): Department of Labour’s Director General Ram Prasad Bhattarai has said that the new Labour Act has ended discriminatory treatment against labourers.
At a programme organized by Asia Pacific Regional Executive of Public Service International (PSI) — a global umbrella organization of trade union, said that the enforcement of new Labour Rule would help address several problems of labourers. “The Act has specified provisions related to remuneration, gratuity and health insurance. There are special provisions for the workers involved in transport, tourism and tea estate”, he clarified.
He further said that collaboration would be enhanced with PSI to end growing foreign employment by generating employment opportunities for 500,000 unemployed people every year and improve public conducts.
Nepal Trade Union Congress (NTUC) Chairperson Pushkar Acahrya, General Federation of Nepal Trade Union (GEFONT) Chairperson Binod Shrestha, official Trade Union Chairperson Subodh Devkota and Nepal Health Workers Association Ramji Dahal said the trade union would play significant role in framing laws friendly to labourers at federal, provincial and local levels.
They also called for PSI to support Nepal’s trade union to raise voice against exploitation meted out against labourers in Nepal.
On the occasion, PSI’s general secretary Rosa Pavanelli stressed the need to launch a labour movement once again when labourers have come across challenges in their works due to growing privatization and liberalization. “We should play role for poverty reduction by imparting a message that theer is no space for injustice”.
Violence against women labourers have increased in several forms and manifestations with increasing privatization of industry and factories, he noted.
He also said that women workers have been relegated to backburner with the World Bank laying emphasis on privatization.
